The new art season is here, and it’s bringing more than auctions and blockbuster exhibitions. This fall, five brand-new museums are opening their doors—and each promises experiences you won’t forget. From Almaty to New York, here’s where to go.
Almaty Museum of Arts, Almaty
Central Asia’s first private contemporary art museum finally opens this fall. Founder Nurlan Smagulov teamed up with UK architects Chapman Taylor and cultural consultants Lord Cultural Resources to create a building that’s as ambitious as its collection. Think soaring atriums, sunlit galleries, creative studios, a library, restaurant, and even an art park.
The collection? Over 700 works by Kazakh, Asian, and international artists—including Anselm Kiefer, Yayoi Kusama, and Richard Serra. Opening festivities will be a festival of performances, poetry, and exhibitions, with the centerpiece Qonaqtar tracing the story of contemporary art in the region.
Opening: Fall 2025
Fondation Cartier, Paris
Fondation Cartier turns 40 this year—and celebrates by moving into a stunning 19th-century building at the heart of Palais-Royal. Designed by Jean Nouvel, the new 6,500-square-meter space features modular exhibition platforms, an auditorium, bookstore, and restaurant.
Expect a mix of history and innovation: the opening show will draw from 4,500 works by more than 500 artists worldwide. Fondation Cartier has a track record of introducing European audiences to trailblazers like Matthew Barney and Takashi Murakami—so expect surprises.
Opening: October 25, 2025
Studio Museum, Harlem, New York
The Studio Museum in Harlem has a new home, a seven-story building by Adjaye Associates. Its opening exhibition revisits the legacy of Tom Lloyd, a trailblazer in abstraction and technology.
The museum’s collection spans nearly 60 years, with over 9,000 works by 800 artists, including Rashid Johnson, Simone Leigh, and Wangechi Mutu. Highlights for the opening include David Hammons’s iconic red-black-green flag, Glenn Ligon’s neon tribute to Muhammad Ali, and Houston Conwill’s Joyful Secrets—seven time capsules that won’t be opened until 2034.
Opening: November 15, 2025
New Museum, New York
After a three-year renovation, the New Museum is back, bigger than ever. The seven-story, 5,600-square-meter annex by Rem Koolhaas and Shohei Shigematsu doubles the exhibition space and adds artist studios and the New Inc art-and-tech incubator.
The reopening show, New People: Memories of the Future, features 150 artists—El Lissitzky, Picasso, Gerhard Richter, and more. Three new site-specific installations debut: Chabalala Self on the facade, Sarah Lucas in the plaza, and Klara Hosnedlova in the atrium.
Opening: November 2025
This fall, these five museums promise more than just art—they promise experiences. New galleries, bold architecture, and unforgettable exhibitions are waiting for you. Make your art season epic.
