On the 14th of April I had an opportunity to celebrate the third anniversary of the All About Art podcast at an enriching Arts Career, and Networking conference, hosted by Berntson Bhattacharjee Gallery co-founded by India Bhattacharjee. It was a truly remarkable Sunday, brimming with inspiration, networking opportunities, and personal development, all set within a backdrop of vibrant and captivating artworks by Yulia Iosilzon. Join me as we delve deeper into the essence of this exhibition and conference, exploring the art and connections forged on that memorable day.

About the exhibition
Yulia Iosilzon’s solo exhibition, Modus Operandi, serves as a heartfelt homage to the often-overlooked figure of the humble snail. In a society that frequently underestimates these creatures, Yulia finds profound symbolism in their portrayal, recognizing them as icons of tolerance and perseverance. For Yulia, the circular shape of the snail’s shell evokes notions of femininity, a sentiment further amplified by her recent journey into motherhood. Reflecting on the birth of her son last year, she identifies the snail as her totem animal, a powerful symbol of motherhood and nurturing. Drawing inspiration from the realm of fantasy and children’s book illustrations, Yulia crafts her own mythical figures, blending the elements of imagination with her artistic vision. This imaginative approach imbues her exhibition with a sense of inclusivity, inviting both children and adults into a world of enchantment. Surrounded by Yulia’s magical works, visitors find themselves captivated and intrigued, drawn into a realm where whimsy and wonder intertwine.

What immediately drew my attention was the exquisite presentation: Iosilzon’s snails, displayed in various sizes and colours, gracefully adorned pedestals and emerged from the corners of canvases. As the conference unfolded, I found myself increasingly captivated by the playful presence of these snails, strategically tucked away in corners, a delightful diversion that kept me engaged and attentive throughout the event.

Each painting within her collection unfolds its own unique storyline or impression. Downstairs, a whimsical installation called Snail Coliseum invited visitors to shed their shoes, walk on the fluffy, hand-made carpet and immerse themselves fully in the experience. With snails adorning every nook and cranny, it felt akin to embarking on a fantastical journey alongside Alice from Wonderland.
