For years, the Met Gala event has remained one of the most watched and commented events, combining the world of fashion and art. It’s a great opportunity to present fashion taste and style in an unconventional and creative way.

This year’s event will take place on the first Monday of May. The 2024 version of Costume Institute exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art is titled Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion and will feature 250 items from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection. It will be a great opportunity to see some of the rarely seen exhibits.

It was recently announced that the very known celebrities happen to be this year’s co-chairs of Met Gala. Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez and Zendaya will accompany Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, at this very special event.

The magazine announced this year’s dress code on social media with a fun conversation between celebrities. The video also reveals the main inspiration, which is a painting The Old Gateway by Thomas Edwin Mostyn.

As it is presented, the dress code for this year has been influenced by J.G. Ballard’s 1962 novel The Garden of Time, a story portraying a count and countess residing in a villa overseeing an extraordinary garden invaded by a mob. In alignment with the book’s breathtaking imagery, the dress code is described as centered around “fleeting beauty.” There is also a suggestion into taking inspiration from melancholic floral patterns, like from last month’s couture collections.

“Consider a look from Simone Rocha’s couture debut via Jean Paul Gaultier, where models walked with silver-dipped roses in their hands (…) or look 36 from Giambattista Valli would do well with its melodramatic impressionistic sequined florals” – as stated in a release from the MET.

Moreover, MET encourages to dive deep into collections from last decade. For example, Dries Van Noten’s Spring 2014 collection, featuring breathtaking embroideries of parrot tulips, and Karl Lagerfeld’s floral-decorated creations in Chanel’s Spring 2015 Couture collection, are served as additional sources of inspiration. A release from the MET encourages to “explore notions of rebirth and renewal, using nature as a metaphor for the impermanence of fashion”.

“Sleeping Beauties will heighten our engagement with these masterpieces of fashion by evoking how they feel, move, sound, smell and interact when being worn, ultimately offering a deeper appreciation of the integrity, beauty and artistic brilliance of the works on display,” said Met CEO Max Hollein in the announcement.

The Met Gala will be held on May 6 followed by the opening of the exhibition to the public from May 10.
